NEW YORK (AFP) - a year after he committed suicide, British designer Alexander McQueen stars in a sumptuous retrospective New York celebrating her furiously inventive, but always romantic creations.
The Metropolitan Museum show opening Wednesday and until July 31 draws a constellation of stars list of guests at a gala preview Monday which saw the rock stars, models and hotshots Hollywood rub shoulders running.
Each of them, including Colin Firth and Stella McCartney, paid tribute to the man widely regarded as a genius of fashion before he took his life.
Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met's Costume Institute exhibition, said "Alexander McQueen: Savage beauty" merit its place among the other treasures Museum.
Bolton "with his fascination with grotesque, gruesome, sublime, Alexander McQueen is nothing less than a great artist, and it is home to the Metropolitan Museum," told journalists.
Sarah Burton, artistic director at the fashion house Alexander McQueen who made the dress of Kate Middleton for her marriage to Prince William last week stated that the deceased founder was "just a true genius."
McQueen died on 11 February of the year last at the age of 40 years, after a career which constantly surprised the fashion world with an extravaganza that exposure of the Museum sought to recall 19 years.
Some of his words of choice interpolate actual parts, including a hundred models wearing its apparel and accessories almost as much, all set against the music-like a howling wind.

Alongside models of his pants low slung signature, read the explanation: "I want to with bumsters elongate the body.". Not only show the buttocks. For me this part of the body which is the most erotic part of the whole person body, man or woman. ?
Another feature of the imagination of McQueen recalled here is his interest in the macabre as a jacket entitled "Jack the Ripper stalks his victims" introduced in 1992 in London.
"It is important to examine death, because death is part of life." This is sad, melancholic but romantic at the same time. "Anything which is to the end", wrote McQueen.
Another of his revelations is as for accessories with an aspect "sado-masochist." He showed in his hats, which include the use of quillwork black-painted and sprayed with silver leather and black.
McQueen may use any material, whether shells or even crocodile head transformed into shoulder pads.
Bolton said however that McQueen was before a romantic. The exhibition is organized in the "romantic spirit," "Gothic romantic," "Romantic nationalism", "Romantic exoticism", "Romantic Primitivism" and "Romantic naturalism."
"It was a true romantic in the self-involved sense of the term." He channeled the sublime, "said Bolton.
McQueen agreed: "I am a romantic schizophrenic."
