Ivory Coast resumed the Gbagbo field

Red Cross workers extraction of bodies left in the streets of Yopougon Government forces say they are now in control of all of the main city of Abidjan in C?te d'Ivoire.

Supporters of the deposed President Laurent Gbagbo had been holding out in the district of Yopougon, but a military commander, said that they had now been defeated.


The district has been the scene of fierce fighting during the struggle between Mr. Gbagbo and President Alassane Ouattara.


PM Guillaume Soro, visiting the site later, said the streets there were "littered organ".


"We have seen a cemetery improvised at the headquarters of the militia." I can imagine the massacre which took place, "he says.


"I am still in shock after seeing all these deaths, all of these bodies."


The Reuters news agency reported that officials of the Red Cross have collected nearly 70 organizations to date.


Commander Cherif Ousmane said the whole of Yopougon, Abidjan business district, was "now permanently occupied by us."


The local population, said that veterans Gbagbo had terrorized the area.


"They are armed and that they did whatever they wanted," a man said to Reuters.


Other residents said food and water were in short supply and infrastructure damaged by the fighting.


It is believed that more than 1,000 have been killed since Mr. Gbagbo refused to accept defeat in the presidential election in November.


He was arrested in the presidential residence in Abidjan in April and is currently detained in the North of the country.
