BERLIN - German Chancellor Wolfgang Sch?uble, said Friday that Europe will decide soon on a joint candidate to become the next leader of the Monetary Fund International.
"We need a common European candidate and we are looking for someone who is the most qualified and has the best chance", he told journalists. "A decision definitively soon happen."
Said Germany had "not waived present a candidate of its own" to succeed to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, but was European countries take a decision on which to present.
The Minister said a source Thursday to have a "very high opinion" on the French favourite at the head of the lender based in Washington, Finance Minister Christine Lagarde.
But the German Government's official position is that, while Chancellor Angela Merkel holds Lagarde in high esteem, no decision has been filed on that will get the top IMF job.
A survey by Reuters of economists showed Thursday that 32 of 56 cru Lagarde has more chance of succeeding Strauss-Kahn.
LaGarde has refused to say if she was interested, but told reporters: "any candidacy, according to what it is, must come from Europeans together, all together."
