IAEA: 'Probably nuclear' Syrian Site

The US said the Syria reactor is similar to a Korea of the North, a Syrian site bombed by Israel jets in 2007 was "very probably" a nuclear reactor, said the United Nations Atomic watchdog.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has been studied, US claims that the Syria was building a secret nuclear reactor with the help of North Korea.

The report of the IAEA even stronger on the Syria came after several years of investigations blocked and is likely to increase pressure on Damascus.

Israel bombarded the remote desert site of the reactor assumed in September 2007.

Syria, explains the site - near Dayr Alzour in the remote country northeast - was an unused military installation in construction. She also denied having nuclear ties of North Korea, who herself has refused the transfer of nuclear technology in Syria.

But the confidential IAEA report, obtained by the BBC, said the bombed building was similar to the type and size in a reactor and that samples collected on the site indicated a connection with nuclear activities.

The Syria is a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation (NPT) Treaty, which gives him the right to enrich its own civil nuclear fuel, under IAEA inspection.

But he also signed a safeguards agreement with the IAEA that it is required to notify the monitoring of nuclear power of the United Nations of any project of construction of a new nuclear facility.
