UN Urges Uganda to stop excessive force (PA)

NAIROBI, Kenya - Head of the human rights of the United Nations urged it the Ugandan authorities to stop the excessive use of force against demonstrators after protests resulting in eight deaths and more than 250 others wounded over the past three weeks.

Navi Pillay, said Sunday in Geneva that it was "dismayed" by the repeated abuse of the countries top political opposition, Kizza Besigye.

Police and army soldiers fired live ammunition at rioters Friday, a day after the violent arrest of the Besigye. Police broke through the window of his vehicle with the butt of a rifle and he sprayed with tear gas short-range before him grouping in the back of a pickup truck and speeding up offshore.

Besigye has held five demonstrations "walk to work" to protest against the increase in the price and what he called a corrupt government.
