Fugitive arrested Rwandan genocide

Bernard Munyagishari is accused of being a militia leader who orchestrated the murder of Tutsis and moderate Hutus Gisenyi in 1994.

He was caught in an operation mounted by the Congolese army in collaboration with a team of tracking by the Tribunal of the United Nations tent of genocide suspects.

Some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus died in the 100-day genocide.

Nine other Rwandan, accused of being key authors of the genocide are still at large.

The Church attacks

Correspondent of the BBC Will Ross Africa, explains Mr. Munyagishari, once a teacher and football referee, was apprehended in North Kivu in Eastern Congo DR - where many of those who participated in the 1994 genocide were hiding and causing the suffering of the Congolese people.

Mr. Munyagishari is facing charges of genocide, murder and rape and is should be provided to the Tribunal International Criminal for Rwanda (ICTR), the Court in Tanzania established to try the ringleaders of the genocide.

According to the indictment, he was the head of the militia Interahamwe Hutu in Gisenyi in the West of the country.

He trained fighters in forests in Rwanda and their army to wipe out the ethnic Tutsi population.

He is also accused of inciting attacks on churches where people had sought refuge.

The indictment said he ordered a group of female militiamen, led by his wife, in sexually tortured Tutsi women before killing.

Our correspondent says that one of the nine suspects of genocide in the large is Felicien Kabuga, that many believe have been protected for years by powerful politicians in the Kenya.

Last week, the Chief Prosecutor of the ICTR court stated that the Kenyan Government could more be done to apprehend him.

Worship Chile suspect pair arrested

  the Chile Police have arrested two alleged members of the secret sect, Colonia Dignidad.

Rebeca Schaefer and Peter Schmidt are accused of kidnapping, homicide, involuntary guilty and belonging to an illegal organization.

They handed themselves in after a judge ordered their arrest Monday with five others.

The judge issued a warrant for the arrest of Hartmut Hopp, Deputy Head of the Colonia Dignidad, who fled to the Germany.

Ms. Schaefer is the adoptive daughter of worship former leader and supporter Nazi, Paul Schaefer, who died in prison in April 2010.

He was serving a term of 20 years for abusing sexually children at Colonia Dignidad.

Ms. Schaefer and her husband Peter Schmidt were arrested after having travelled together to a police station.

The Ministry of justice told the BBC that the Chile had filed an international warrant through Interpol for the arrest of Hartmut Hopp.

Hopp, 66, disappeared Friday last bail, awaiting trial.

"We are aware of press reports that he may have fled to his native Germany," said the spokesman of the Ministry of justice, Hector Cruzac.

The Chilean authorities are currently studying how the German citizen managed to escape from the residency.

Hopp, who is a doctor by profession, was sentenced by a court year last of sexual abuse.

However, the authorities did had not yet imprisoned him as they wanted to return to his trial on additional charges, including membership in a banned organization.

Daughter-in-law of the fugitive, Baerbel Schreiber, said at a survey site Chilean had arrived in Germany several days ago and it was always there.

Colonia Dignidad served as a centre of torture during the military regime of General Augusto Pinochet.

The colony was taken over by the Government of Chile in 2005.

A subsequent investigation showed how it was operating as a State within a State, with children forced to live separately from their parents.
